Noticing the Signals Your Body Already Gives You

Attunement, when you really notice and respond to your own experience, comes from moving beyond what society expects from you, all of the “shoulds” that float through your mind, especially when resolutions are everywhere.  It’s about moving towards connection to your body.  It’s about learning the signs that your body gives you that indicate when something feels in harmony with you.

First, let’s talk a little about what misalignment might feel like.  Sometimes it’s subtle – an urge to rush through a task…or distract yourself from starting, mental fog, a slight tightening when you’ve agreed to something.  The message isn’t always overt, dramatic, or obvious.

Now let’s talk about what alignment might feel like. You might notice yourself leaning in as you hear or speak about something, it might be feeling more present even if the task isn’t easy, it might be deeper, slower breaths as you think about an option.  It’s not always about finding an option that feels good but about recognizing how your body feels more grounded in considering that option.

When you pay attention to your body’s signals, it isn’t about immediately having all of the answers.  It is about turning down the outside noise, the history of other people’s expectations of you, the weight of society’s ‘shoulds’ and connect with that sensation of feeling more settled in you even before a change occurs.  Therapy can aid in helping you connect and attune, a skill that grows with attention and patience.
